Hiking Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa, at 19,341 feet above the tropical African savanna and is irresistible to many trekkers. It is not a technical climb, however due to its extreme weather and altitude serious preparation is needed. The parks services requires all trekkers to be with a guide and the minimum ascent to take no less than 5 days. Most guide packages offer 6-7 day ascents and some longer. The longer the itinerary the better the opportunity to acclimate to high altitudes and increased opportunity to successfully summit.

Altitude and Acute Mountain Sickness is a major concern when trekking Kilimanjaro. It's important to allow adequate time to acclimate to the altitude. If you have medical conditions this should be discussed with your travel health specialists. It is important to know the signs and symptoms of AMS, including High Altitude Pulmonary Edema (HAPE) and High Altitude Cerebral Edema (HACE), and know how to treat them and when to evacuate for further medical treatment. Medications such a acetazolamide or dexamethasone can help with acclimation; prevent and treat AMS.

Malaria is a unique concern and many trekkers will be on anti malaria medications because of travel plans before or after their trek.

Treatment and prevention for Traveler's Diarrhea should also be considered.

Kilimanjaro is physically demanding and is very remote. It's extreme weather of tropical heat, heavy rains, and bitter cold predisposes trekkers to elements. With higher elevations their is increased UV radiation, increasing the risk of sunburns. Sunscreen is essential. Dehydration is also a concern as decreased water vapor in the air is present at higher altitudes. Gear should be stored in water proof bags. Frost bite and hypothermia is a threat at higher altitudes. Having adequate health and evacuation insurance and first aid kits are important for safety. Knowing how to treat routine health problems, injuries (rock slides can happen as well as falls), and knowing when and where to get medical help is essential for survival.

Its essential to visit a travel clinic before attempting Mount Kilimanjaro or other highest peaks in the world.
