Leptospirosis in Fiji

Fiji is experiencing a Leptospirosis Outbreak at the moment due to flooding.

Fiji is a bacteria that enters the body through cuts and abrasions in the skin, conjunctiva or mucous membranes when in contact with urine

or reproductive fluids from infected animals either directly or indirectly through contaminated food or water. It is rare through animal bites or human to human contact.

It is seen throughout the world, but more common in tropical areas. Outbreaks are common after heavy rains and flooding. Travelers who swim or boat in fresh water at at greatest risk especially after peak times. This occurs after prolonged time in the water or swallowing contaminated water.

Often times symptoms are short lived and include fever, however in severe cases can be fatal with meningitis and multi system organ failure.

The good news it is treatable with common antibiotics. Prevention is aimed at minimizing exposure, covering scrapes, proper clothing and taking antibiotics prophylactically before and during time of exposure.
