Permethrin, What is it, and How to use it.


With so many mosquito born illnesses such as malaria, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, Zika, Dengue Fever, and Chikungunya to be worried about while traveling it is smart to be take all necessary measures. One way to do this is to use permethrin.

It is a chemical that is sprayed on clothing that lasts for many washings. It is not to be applied to skin. It also provides protection from ticks that also carry many diseases. It can be applied to clothing, hats, shoes, bed nets, jackets, and camping gear, including back packs.

Brand names include Permanone, Sawyer, Permethrin, Repel, and Ultrathon Permethrin Clothing Treatment and are registered with the EPA. They are sprayed or soaked on to clothing depending on particular product. It is odorless after drying and does not stain clothing.

Clothing is available for sale that is pretreated with permethrin. In the US they are marketed as Insect Shield, BugsAway, and Insect Blocker. These brands are labeled to effective through 70 washings.

It is very effective in repelling and killing mosquitos, ticks and other biting insects. Clothing and gear must be treated 24-48 hours in advance to allow time to dry. Follow label instructions for proper use to provide optimal protection.

In summary, Permethrin is only used on clothing and must be done at least 24-48 hours prior to wear. It is the only insect repellent that is remains effective after several washings. Most spray and soaking formulations last through 6 washings.
