Jet Lag

For travelers traveling across more than 3 time zones jet lag can occur. It is a temporary sleep disorder that occurs when crossing time zones. It happens when you body's internal clock adjusts slowly to the time in your new destination. This interrupts sleep and wake cycles. If traveling east it is difficult to fall asleep and getting up in t

he morning. If you are traveling west you become tired in the early evening and wake up early.

Symptoms include poor sleep, poor performance in physical and mental activities, and gastrointestinal symptoms and decreased interest and enjoyment in meals.

It is important to exercise, eat healthy, and get plenty of rest. Avoiding large meals, alcohol, and caffeine are helpful. Drinking lots of water to stay hydrated is also necessary. Wearing comfortable clothing and sleeping during long flights are also helpful.

When possible at your destination avoid needing to make critical decisions or having a crucial meeting the day following your arrival. Getting the right amount of sun exposure and eating meals on local times will be helpful. Short 20-30 minutes energy naps help with energy levels without interfering with night time sleep.

If you have a medical condition, especially diabetes speak with your travel specialist to help in timing your medications. Travel specialist can also recommend other techniques, discuss routines, discuss supplemental sleep aids, and prescription sleep aids if necessary.
